Hello reader,
We find ourselves already partway through February, and there may be space to pause.
January can feel long and demanding, and the beginning of a new year often carries more weight than we realise. Simply being here and continuing, is something to acknowledge. If things feel steady, unsettled, hopeful, or heavy, all of it is allowed.
Perhaps this month is less about beginning again, and more about softening into where you are. Not to change everything, but to notice what needs care.
This month often carries a quieter energy. The intensity of new year expectations settles, and what remains can be more honest. You might notice a sense of steadiness. Or restlessness. Or reflection. You might feel flat, unsure or hopeful.
Therapy is not always about change. Sometimes it is about understanding. Sometimes it is about noticing patterns. Sometimes it is simply about staying with what is.
If January asked a lot of you, February can be a month of gentleness.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Week
Belonging is about feeling welcomed, valued, included, and safe to be ourselves. It matters deeply in childhood, and it continues to matter throughout adulthood.
At The Surrey Centre, we work with children, adolescents, young adults, and families. With half term approaching, this can be a small opportunity to reconnect. You might ask a young person in your life:
-
Where do you feel most yourself?
-
Who helps you feel safe or understood?
-
What places feel like “your place”?
Simple, curious conversations can strengthen belonging more than perfect words ever could.

Thinking About Starting Therapy?
If you are considering therapy, it often begins with a simple conversation.
You are welcome to get in touch by phone, WhatsApp, or email to express your interest. A member of our clinical team will be happy to answer any initial questions and talk you through what the assessment process involves.
An assessment offers a calm, confidential space to explore what has brought you here, what you hope for, and to consider together what support might feel most helpful. There is no obligation to commit to ongoing therapy. It is simply a first step.
We are here when you feel ready.

The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel van der Kolk
This month’s resource explores how experiences are held not only in the mind, but also in the body. It offers insight into why past events can continue to shape present reactions, and how healing often involves reconnecting with safety, awareness, and regulation.
For many, understanding this can feel reassuring. There is often a reason our bodies respond the way they do.
“As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself…The critical issue is allowing yourself to know what you know. That takes an enormous amount of courage.”

Belonging at Every Age
This week’s theme invites us to consider belonging not only for children, but for ourselves. You might gently reflect:
-
Where do I feel most accepted as I am?
-
Who do I feel safe to be honest with?
-
What spaces help me feel grounded?
Belonging is not something we grow out of. It remains a quiet human need across the lifespan.
This February, self-care might mean strengthening a connection. Reaching out. Stepping into a space that feels steady. Or creating a small place that feels like your own.
A Closing Thought
Belonging begins with being allowed to show up as you are.
This February, may you find a place, a person, or a moment that reminds you that you matter.
