Families are where we first learn how to relate, how to belong, how to speak – and how to stay silent. They can be places of deep care, but also confusion, hurt, and disconnection. When something feels stuck or strained, family therapy offers a space to gently explore what’s happening between us, with support, presence, and compassion.

At The Surrey Centre, we don’t take sides, give verdicts, or assign blame. Instead, we hold a space where each voice can be heard, and where patterns can begin to shift – not through pressure, but through insight, reflection, and being fully met.

Family therapy is a relational process — a space to meet one another in a different way, supported by a trained therapist who brings steadiness and care. It might involve two people, or several. You may be navigating a moment of crisis, or simply noticing that something isn’t working as it once did.

Often, families come to therapy when:

  • Communication feels difficult or disconnected
  • There are changes or tensions between parents and children
  • Someone in the family is struggling emotionally or psychologically
  • There’s been a recent upheaval, illness, or life transition
  • Old patterns or roles are being repeated and no longer feel helpful
  • Support is needed for a child or young person, and the wider family wants to understand how best to help

Every family is different. Some choose to work together in the room, while others start with just one or two members. Sometimes the child or young person attends; other times, sessions are held just for parents or carers.

What remains constant is the spirit of the work – the idea that healing happens not only within us, but between us. That change can begin when someone holds the space for us to speak, to listen, and to be seen in a new way.

The work may involve reflective conversation, but also relational awareness, creative exploration, and moments of quiet connection. It’s not about performing the “right” way to be a family – it’s about discovering, gently, how to be in relationship again.

Sessions are available in person (Headley, Bath or Chepstow) or online, depending on what feels most accessible. They may take place weekly, fortnightly or more flexibly, depending on your needs.

(Please note: while we specialise in emotional and psychological wellbeing, eating disorder support is offered through our dedicated centre at The Surrey Centre for Eating Disorders.)

If you’re supporting a child or young person, we also offer sessions just for you – a chance to explore what’s happening, how it’s affecting you, and how best to support your child while staying resourced yourself.

You don’t have to hold everything alone.

We know that stepping into therapy as a family can feel vulnerable. But it can also be a turning point – a place where the story begins to shift, just a little, together.

We’re here to hold that space with you, when you are ready.

Healing begins when we truly listen to ourselves. You are not alone – we are here to support you.
